Commencement 2012


John Gregory Phillips

My step-grandson graduated today with honors at the Vicksburg Convention Center.  He plans to attend Mississippi State in the fall.  The family is so proud of him and wish him the very best of luck for his future.

Micky Mahoney Dies (Class of '62)

Michael Alexander "Mickey" Mahoney, Sr. died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at his home.  He was 68.

Mr. Mahoney was born in Vicksburg and was a 1962 graduate of St. Aloysius High School where he was co-captain of the football team.  He played football at Hinds Community College, where he was selected All-State, and at the University of Southern Mississippi.  He received a Master of Business degree from Mississippi State University.

He was a Certified Public Accountant for Ernst and Ernst of Houston, Babcock and Wilcox in Ohio and Bechtel and Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.  He also taught at Alcorn State University and Hinds Community College.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Louis Frank Mahoney, and a brother, Terrence Anthony "Terry" Mahoney.

Survivors include six children, Michael Mahoney, Jr., Michelle Mahoney, Mary Ann Mahoney, Michail Mahoney and Monica Mahoney, all of Virginia, his mother, Ann Salmon Mahoney of Vicksburg; three sisters, Pamela Mahoney Cook of Houma and Colleen Mahoney Wells and Karen Mahoney Pope, both of Vicksburg, two brothers, John Ashley Mahoney and Kevin Anders Mahoney, both of Vicksburg, and other relatives and friends.

Services were held today at 11:00 a.m. (Friday) at St. Paul Catholic Church.  Burial followed at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.  Visitation was Thursday night from 6-8 at Fisher Funeral Home and 10:00 a.m. this morning at the church.

Pallbearers were Phillip Bucci, Bobby Middleton, John George, Wayne Cook, Jr., Jimmy Buell an David Wells.

Honorary pallbearers were Billy Riddle, Mike Franco and Jimmy Salmon.

Granddaughter @ MHSAA State Girls' Golf Tournament

Bob and I are so proud of our granddaughter, Laura Phillips, (holding trophy) and her team members this past Monday and Tuesday at the Canton Country Club.  St. Al is second in the Class I tournament with a team score of 200, just four strokes off the pace of tournament-leading St. Patrick.  Laura Phillips led the Lady Flashes with a 96.  Anna Fletcher shot a 104 and Beth Newman carded a 108 for St. Al.  Our sincere congrats to Laura!

Ethel Towne Kendricks Dies (Class of '62)

Ethel T. Kendrick died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at River Region Medical Center.  She was 69.  Born in New Orleans, she was the daughter of the late Wiley G. Towne and Ethel Morrissey Towne.  Mrs. Kendrick was a 1962 graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy, later attending Hinds Community College and was a graduate of the Vicksburg School of Cosmetology.  She served as a secretary of St. Francis Xavier Academy for 15 years.  She was later employed with U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Human Resources Division.  Mrs. Kendrick was a communicant of St. Paul Catholic Church, serving as a past president of the St. Paul Altar Society.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Katherine Towne.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Kendrick of Vicksburg; her daughter, Connie Kendricks Miller of Hattiesburg; her son, Jimmy Kendrick, Jr. (Ginny) of Brandon; four grandchildren, Katelyn Miller, Mary Claire Kendrick, Katherine Kendrick and Isabella Jeffers; and her sister Mittie Towne Warren (James) of Vicksburg.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. today at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Monsignor Patrick Farrell, pastor, as celebrant.  Visitation will be at the church today from 1:00 p.m. until the service.  Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to The Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 39105 and to the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society, P. O. Box 820171, Vicksburg, MS  39182.

Pallbearers will be Syd Johnston, Jerome Curro, Riley Nelson, John Robert Price, Warren Guider and Jerrell Strawn.

Alabama Chapter of the Class of '59


I received an email yesterday from our classmate, Phillip Doiron, that another meeting had been held and the above picture was attached.  Left to right, Phillip, Dickie Matherne, Phillip Little, and brother Walter Little.  Phillip is from the class of '62.  We met at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Guntersville, AL. Dickie’s wife, Debra, and Phillip Little’s wife, Ruth, also attended.
