SFXA Class of 1959~Vera

~Vera Agnes Marshall~

Vera graduated from St. Francis Xavier Academy in May 1959. Her favorite subject was Algebra, taught by Sister Mary Assumpta. This was her favorite subject because Sister would go to sleep during class and she would slip out of class to fraternize with the other group of our class who were having Study Hall in the Library. Usually while she was out of class, Sister would awaken and she would have a time getting back into class without her seeing her. Everyone was on watch telling her when she would doze back off and could come back in.

In September she enrolled in the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from there in May of 1962. She worked at Mercy Hospital on the surgical floor from June 10, 1962 to August 20, 1963. She then went to work at the Vicksburg Infirmary as a Staff Nurse from August 30, 1963 until January 1, 1965. She married George Brown in January 1965 who was employed at Westinghouse Electric and later went to work for International Paper Company, retiring in March of 1994. She worked on the Surgical Floor again from January 1965 until her first child was born in November. She stayed home and worked part time after this until her third child was born and went to work full time at Haworth Home Health. She worked there for about 15 years and served as the first Staff Nurse, the first Supervising Nurse, and the Director of Nurses. During this time in 1982 she was named Home Health Nurse of the Year for the State of Mississippi. She had several part-time jobs after leaving Haworth in 1985. She worked at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Cardiac and Surgical ICU. She also worked there for several years and traveled in the Delta doing Home Health. She went back to Haworth to some Utilization Reviews. She only worked there for a short time. She then went back to work at the Vicksburg Hospital on the Gero-Psych and Adult Psych Units and worked for 6 years. During this time she had a cardiac arrest and was advised by her physician to retire on disability and did not. She now has an internal pacemaker inserted and still going strong. She went back to work for Vicksburg Hospital until both hospitals merged. She was then offered a job at River Region Health Systems as the Utilization Review Coordinator in the Chemical Dependency Unit in March of 1997. She has been working there ever since.
