After graduation Walter attended Tulane for undergraduate and medical school, graduating from the latter in 1966. After a residency in pathology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and service in the U.S.A.F., he moved to Birmingham, where he specialized in Dermatopathology and was also clinical professor of pathology and dermatology at UAB school of medicine. Walter has three children, Elizabeth, Walter, and Frances, and has six grandchildren. He and his wife, Jane, who is a lawyer, are retired, and they continue to reside in the Birmingham area. He received a masters in theology from Spring Hill in 2004 and is active in his church’s adult education program. Walter and his wife Janie resides in Mountain Brook, AL.
