Class of 1959

We, the Class of 1959, celebrated our 50th reunion on April 24 and 25, 2009. This blog is about sharing memories of our class reunions and a long-ago life at our Alma Mater, S.F.X.A. and S.A.H.S. Good memories of days gone by but not forgotten! A gift to my classmates. ~Marian Ann Love ~

Miss Frances Herbert

Miss Frances Herbert, who taught for many years in local schools began her career at Jefferson Davis Academy in the Yokena-Redbone community in 1937. The school by then had only eight grades, though it had opened in 1916 as one of the county's vocational high schools. The Jeff Davis facility in 1937-38 was, from left, Mrs. Ellen Hyland Owens, Miss Martha Hommel, Miss Frances Herbert, Principal Miller Matthews and Miss Guion Bowie. The photo belonged to Miss Herbert and is now part of the Old Court House Museum Collection.

Miss Herbert was our 2nd grade teacher at St. Francis Xavier Academy.

Miss Herbert was without question the best teacher I ever had. I have taught many students at many levels in my life, and I only wish I were as good at it as she. Those of us who love to read and who had her as our teacher know she deserves much or most of the credit for that lifelong gift.
